The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has denied a request to block the introduction of the drug because it is not approved for distribution in the country.
The FDA has also denied a request for approval of the drug. The company that developed the drug, Eli Lilly, has been under pressure from its maker to get approval for the drug.
The FDA has rejected applications from the Philippines government to approve Viagra or other impotence drugs. But the drug is not approved for distribution in the country.
The drug is being studied for possible side effects.
On Monday, the FDA approved Viagra for the treatment of impotence, a condition that affects millions of men around the world.
Viagra, which treats erectile dysfunction in men, is the best-selling impotence drug in the Philippines. A study published last month by the American Medical Association and others showed that Viagra was the drug's best selling impotence drug in the Philippines.
According to the FDA, the drug is not approved for distribution in the country.
“In the Philippines, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. This drug is not approved for distribution in the country,” said Dr. Jose de la Fuente, an FDA official who was part of the FDA-coordinated project. “The drug is approved for use in this country and in the Philippines and in the United States and other countries, and in order to obtain approval to supply the drug, the drug is given to the public in the form of a tablet, an oral pill or a nasal spray.”
The FDA and other agencies have also been looking at a potential problem with Viagra that has not been approved by the agency.
Viagra is not approved for distribution in the Philippines.
The drug that is being studied for possible side effects is a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. The drug was approved by the FDA in June 2007.
According to a study published in the journal “Journal of Sexual Medicine” in April 2009, Viagra, which is also called PDE 5 inhibitors, was found to be the drug’s most successful treatment.
“This medication is the same as Viagra and it is the most effective drug,” said Dr. Jose de la Fuente, who was also part of the FDA-coordinated project.
“This means that men with erectile dysfunction in the form of ED, who have a very low sex drive, would be able to achieve and maintain an erection. This is a very popular treatment for men with ED.”
Viagra, which is approved for use in men, is the best-selling drug in the Philippines.
